Your Body is Whispering - Are You Listening?

Life, Kids, Work etc.

For years, I wore “busy” like a badge of honour. I skipped lunch, pushed through exhaustion, and told myself I’d rest later, when things “calmed down.” But they never really did. What I didn’t realise then was that every headache, every sleepless night, every craving for junk food was my body’s way of saying, “Please slow down, I’m trying to keep you safe.”

Your mind and body are in constant conversation - a dynamic feedback loop designed to protect and restore you. Symptoms aren’t enemies; they’re messages to decode. But for women juggling families, careers, and ageing parents, you probably don’t have time and you just ignore them.

The Science of Disconnection

When you continually ignore hunger, pain, or fatigue, your brain’s internal signalling system, responsible for heartbeat, temperature, and energy levels, slows and eventually fails. Chronic stress disrupts it, dulling your ability to “feel” what’s happening inside your body. This is why burnout isn’t just in your head; it’s a nervous system problem that can lead to Dysautonomia.

Research from the Journal of Psychosomatic Research and Frontiers in Neuroscience has shown that long-term activation of the stress response (through cortisol and adrenaline surges) can impair digestion, immune function, and cardiovascular regulation. Over time, this imbalance can lead to conditions that affect how the body functions

When the Body’s Autopilot Fails

Whilst it takes a lot for the autonomic nervous system to fail, the first signs and signals are often ignored.

When it starts to malfunction, it’s as though your internal wiring starts short-circuiting.

For some, it begins subtly-

  • Dizziness when standing up

  • Rapid heartbeat

  • Brain fog and memory issues

  • Heat intolerance. F

It is a serious problem that can become life-altering: fainting episodes, extreme fatigue, and difficulty regulating basic functions.

Studies from Clinical Autonomic Research and the Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine suggest that prolonged stress, trauma, viral infections, or even nutrient deficiencies can contribute to dysautonomia’s onset. What’s striking is how often it appears in women who’ve spent years caring for others before themselves.

A Personal Reckoning

For me, the turning point came when my body simply stopped cooperating. The harder I pushed, the louder the symptoms became, until I couldn’t ignore them anymore. A Fibromyalgia diagnosis made me stand up and take notice. It was then that I realised this wasn’t weakness; it was wisdom. My body had been trying to protect me, but I hadn’t been listening. Once I began to tune in to the signals, I had to learn what to do.

Once I did, everything changed. Energy returned. Focus improved. Even my mood stabilised.

Real-Life Solutions for Reconnection

Healing begins with awareness - not gruelling regimes and restrictive diets - but small, consistent actions:

  1. Pause and check in: Ask yourself - how’s your energy, breath, and mood? These cues reveal more than you think.

  2. Eat with rhythm: Regular meals stabilise blood sugar and calm the nervous system. Skipping meals signals scarcity and triggers stress hormones.

  3. Prioritise restorative rest: Sleep is when your brain clears toxins and resets hormonal balance. Treat it as an essential, not a luxury.

  4. Support your brain: Hypnotherapy, meditation, journalling and relaxation all stimulate the vagus nerve - your body’s natural calming pathway.

  5. Seek integrative support: Find a practitioner to help you understand where you're at so you can learn to reset your nervous system and rebuild resilience.

The Takeaway

Listening to your body isn’t self-indulgent - it’s strategic. The body whispers before it screams, and when you respond early, you protect yourself from far deeper imbalance later.

Your health doesn’t crumble overnight; it erodes quietly through disconnection. But the beautiful truth is this: connection is also how you heal.

It begins when you tune in and pay attention.
